The project is an exemplar of the sustainable transformation of existing buildings with its signature space a double-height, south-facing rooms with consequent problems of overheating.
Informed by discussions with Peter Aldington about the original design philosophy the project sought to retain the original features yet upgrade the external envelope.
Work is now complete on site, and shows amazing results.
- Space Heating Requirements dropped from 475kWh/m2
- year to 35kWh/m2/year
- 93% improvement to the airtightness of the building fabric
- MVHR unit installed with 90% heat recovery efficiency
- 97% reduction in overheating using only passive techniques bringing the comfort conditions within CIBSE guidelines.
This unique project was nominated alongside the Shard in the 2013 Constructing Excellence Awards.
